We would like to wish everyone a safe and fun-filled New Years Eve celebration! In 2012 we wish everyone health, wealth, and happiness!

Best regards,

Sam Williams

We at RRLug would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season! Kick back, relax, spend time with those that are important, and definitely reflect on the gifts you’ve received during the past year. The holiday season is about connecting with those you love and about being grateful! Of course if you have a chance you can also do a little playing with the best software on the planet!!!

Best Wishes,

Sam Williams

Just wanted to remind everyone that we are scheduled to have the November LUG meeting this Saturday (11/12) from 10:30 -2:30. We will have the remaining two meetings of the year at the Cherry Valley Public library! Look forward to seeing you all there!

Just wanted to let everyone know that there is a strong possibility that  RRLug will get a new location very soon. The goal right now is to target Thursday nights, since no location seems to be available on Friday night anymore. We’ve also had a very small number of attendees on the Saturday sessions at the CherryValley Public Library.

Please take a second and vote in the poll I’ve posted on the site.  Look forwarding to seeing the results!

Hey everyone! We are still trying to obtain a nice solidly consistent location and time to conduct our LUG meetings. For the time being we will continue to meet at the Cherry Valley Library. Just a reminder that we have a meeting on Saturday, September 17th at the Cherry Valley Library @ 10:30 am – 2:30pm. The meeting will occur at the meeting room inside the library to the left of the information desk.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

I know many of you may not be getting the LUG news from the listserv. If that’s the case then you probably haven’t been aware that I have been handing out Google+ Invitations for any members that express an interest during  the last week. If you are interested in playing around with Google’s new service please let me know and I will happily send you and invite. You can also contact me with any questions!

Tracy Henness has come through for us this month with a temporary  meeting location. It will require a bit of a drive to Beloit, but this is hopefully going to be a temporary change until we can find a location closer to Rockford.

Thanks again to Tracy for arranging this last minute change  for us!!!  Here is his description of the new  location: I arranged for the lobby of Family Worship Center in Beloit to be available Friday night.  This is located at 1021 Cranston Rd, Beloit, WI.  Free public wifi is available, an a big-screen tv with VGA port available.  Someone would just have to supply a VGA cable (15-pin HDB) 8 ft. or so.

The Google map below renders properly in Chrome, but seems to have issues in other browsers. If you can’t see the  map below please go to the following link: Family Worship Center

As some of you know I am no longer working at Rockford College. The end result is that without College/Professor sponsorship we are going to be changing our meeting venue. Sadly, after 13 years, approximately 156 meetings and after bringing close to 2340 Linux enthusiasts  on campus to share and learn Linux and Open Source,  we are moving. The last meeting of the Rock River Linux Users Group to be held on the Rockford College campus,  was  May 2011 !

Now I Need Your Help!!!

I am  looking for a new venue for the RRLug meetings. If anyone knows of any location that can accommodate a group of between 15-25 people, and ideally  do so at no-cost please contact me with the information as soon as possible!

We had 16 members attend the May meeting. We met at the usual 6:30pm meeting time. Sam Williams conducted the meeting and demonstrated the new Unity user interface for Ubuntu 11.04. We had a general walk through of the basic components of the environment. During the second half of the meeting Sam explained some of the lesser known methods for altering and configuring Unity’s behavior. With a name like Unity there is a bit of confusion and lack of general acceptance on the part of the Linux community. The comments from the group were no different. There were some members that might consider using the new environment, but the majority said they had rather wait and see if Canonical might change its mind on some of the Unity design decisions or on the possible inclusion of the older style Gnome UI. All in all, its a pretty controversial  piece of code. In general, the presentations went well and there was lots of questions and user-feedback!

The May meeting of the Rock River Linux Users Group will start at 6:30pm on 05/19.

Topics:

  • Sam Williams will discuss Ubuntu 11.04
  • Sam will also explore some of the finer points of the Unity window environment.
